The Whitney 2000 trip was a success!!! This year, a group of friends and family hiked from Horseshoe Meadow to the Rocky Basin Lakes. A day of R & R was filled with swimming, fishing, and just enjoying the solitude and nature of the Golden Trout Wilderness. On day 3, the group split up -- some hiked the 15 miles back to HM, and the Whitney Team departed for Crabtree Meadows. Crabtree Meadows was 12 miles away -- 6 miles cross country followed by 6 miles on the Pacific Crest Trail. Day 4 was the summit day -- 6 miles of the John Muir Trail that took us all the way up to Trail Crest, followed by over 2 miles to the summit, followed by 11 miles down to Whitney Portal.
The summit team, comprised of Todd & Branden Felker, Nathan and Andrew Chatwin, and Dave Shevitz hiked almost 20 miles on the summit day, and endured an elevation climb of over 4000 feet from Crabtree Meadows to the summit of Whitney. The trip to the summit and the descent to Whitney Portal took over 15 hours. I hope you enjoy some of our pictures. If you don't have much time, head straight for the 'best pics'.
